Retinal tears are breaks in the retina that can happen when the vitreous gel inside the eye shrinks and separates away from the retina, the delicate and light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. When the vitreous pulls on the retina with sufficient force, it can cause tearing of a section of the retina.
Prompt treatment of retinal tears is necessary before the retinal tear develops into retinal detachment.
Retinal tears must be treated before they progress further into retinal detachment.
The treatment is a laser retinopexy procedure. During laser retinopexy, a scar is created around the tear to form a permanent barricade preventing the retinal tear from progressing into a retinal detachment.
