What Causes Macular Holes?

The macula is a small but crucial area at the center of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. A macular hole is a tiny break in this tissue. When a hole develops, it can cause blurring, distortion, and even a blind spot in the center of your vision, making everyday activities like reading and recognizing faces challenging. Macular holes often develop as part of the natural aging process, or due to eye trauma and high degrees of myopia. (near-sightedness)

What Are Some Symptoms of Macular Holes?
During the early stages of macular hole formation, the hole is small, and your central vision may be only slightly blurred or distorted. As the hole enlarges, your vision becomes progressively worse.
