Retinal detachment is a serious, vision-threatening eye condition where the retina separates from the wall of the eye. A retinal detachment occurs when fluid seeps through the retinal tear and causes the retina to peel away from its underlying tissue. A retinal detachment is an emergency, and needs to be treated as soon as it is detected, in order to maximise the chances that vision can be regained after the surgery.
What Are Some Symptoms of Retinal Detachment?
When an individual experiences possible symptoms of a retinal detachment, the individual should seek advice with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible to minimise the risk of vision loss, as retinal detachments can progress rapidly. As there is no pain with retinal detachment, some of the symptoms to look out for include the following:
Blurry vision, especially in a specific part of one’s visual field
A sudden increase in the number of floaters and flashes
Distorted vision
Loss of central vision
What Are the Risk Factors of Retinal Detachments?
Short-sightedness (myopia)
Known retinal degenerative changes, e.g. lattice degeneration
Prior eye surgery such as cataract surgery
Prior eye trauma
Family history of retinal tears or detachment
How is Retinal Detachment Diagnosed?
Dilating eye drops will be instilled to enlarge the pupils for a dilated eye exam, so that a comprehensive eye examination of the entire retina by our eye specialist, Dr Errol Chan, will be conducted. Wide-field photographs may be obtained as well.
How is Retinal Detachment Treated?
The treatment for a retinal detachment involves surgery. There are several different surgical methods to treat a retinal detachment. At Ascend Eye Clinic, surgical repair of a retinal detachment is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, and patients may go home the same day.
Retinal detachment is an emergency that needs to be treated as soon as they are detected because if left untreated, the retina can continue to detach and cause more risk of permanent vision loss or blindness.
